About Chinese Confinement

Chinese Confinement is an editorial project affiliated with Golden Month. Our aim is to be the clearest, most trustworthy Australian resource on Chinese postpartum confinement: what it is, where it comes from, and how families here can approach it with confidence.

Why we made it

Reliable information about confinement is hard to find in one place. It is often spread across languages, passed down unevenly between generations, and mixed in with marketing. Families in Australia are frequently left to work it out during some of the most tiring weeks of their lives. We wanted to gather it into one calm, considered guide.

How we handle tradition and evidence

We treat the tradition with respect, and we are honest about what it is. When we describe a traditional belief, such as the idea that cold or wind can enter the body after birth, we present it as tradition. When we make a claim about health, we base it on current evidence and we cite our sources. We keep those two things clearly apart so you are never left guessing which is which.

Everything here is general information for education. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified health professional who knows your situation.

How we work

Our guides are written carefully and reviewed by a person before they are published. We would rather publish less and be right than publish quickly. As the site grows, every article will show the sources it draws on.

Who writes this

Our guides are written by a small editorial team, each writing under a consistent pen name and looking after one part of the site. The names below are those bylines, so you can see at a glance who covers what. We are writers and researchers rather than clinicians: nobody here is presented as a doctor, midwife or registered practitioner, which is exactly why we cite our sources on health claims, keep traditional beliefs labelled as tradition, and point you to a qualified professional wherever a decision deserves one.

Who runs it

Chinese Confinement is a project affiliated with Golden Month, a confinement care brand, created to provide education and resources that help new mums through the traditional confinement month. It grew out of wanting the guide we could not find when our own families were going through the month. It is not affiliated with any hospital, government body or medical organisation. We are based in Australia and write for an Australian audience, while respecting that these traditions belong to communities across the world.
